New Digital Hub Aligns with UNDRR Goals to Empower Young Leaders Worldwide

STONY BROOK, N.Y., October 17, 2025 – The Youth Disaster Risk Reduction (YDRR) Initiative today announced the official launch of its global digital platform, a landmark resource designed to centralize tools, foster collaboration, and amplify youth-led action in building community resilience. Rooted in alignment with UNDRR’s 2022-2025 Youth Engagement Action Plan, the platform addresses a critical gap: while young people make up 23% of the global population (90% residing in disaster-prone developing regions), only 35% report having access to structured DRR training or participation channels .

A Catalyst for Inclusive Resilience

The platform’s launch marks a turning point in democratizing disaster risk reduction, moving beyond passive awareness to actionable empowerment. Unlike fragmented existing resources, it integrates four core pillars tailored to youth needs: real-time disaster warnings translated for community application, scenario-based prevention guides, peer-to-peer knowledge sharing, and policy advocacy toolkits.

“For too long, youth have been framed as beneficiaries of DRR efforts rather than architects of them,” said Wuzhou LIAN, Founder and Executive Chair of YDRR and Undergraduate in the Department of Mathematics at The State University of New York at Stony Brook. “This platform unlocks their potential by putting scientific rigor, community insights, and global networks directly in their hands—turning energy into impact.”

The initiative’s timing is urgent: FEMA data shows that communities with youth-led preparedness programs reduce post-disaster recovery time by 22% . By centering youth voices, the platform also advances equity—ensuring marginalized groups, including rural and refugee youth, contribute to solutions that affect their lives.

Phase One Initiatives: From Local Pilots to Global Impact

Following today’s launch, YDRR will roll out three flagship programs over the next 12 months, building on partnerships with leading organizations including IRDR and UNICEF:

  1. Regional Youth DRR Hubs: Launching in China, Brazil, and Thailand by Dec 2026, these physical-digital hybrid centers will train 500 “Youth Resilience Fellows” annually in risk assessment, community organizing, and digital communication. Each hub will partner with local schools to integrate DRR into extracurricular programs, mirroring the scalable model of successful U.S. youth civic engagement initiatives .
  2. Certified Skills Program: Developed with academic experts, the platform’s free certification course will equip youth with credentials in disaster mapping, early warning dissemination, and post-crisis needs assessment. Graduates will gain access to UNDRR’s stakeholder engagement processes, including the Global Platform for DRR .
  3. Youth Policy Lab: A dedicated portal where young leaders can draft, refine, and submit DRR policy proposals to national governments. The lab will launch with a pilot focused on urban flood resilience, leveraging data from 2024 youth-led community surveys in 15 countries.

“The YDRR platform embodies UNDRR’s vision of ‘all-of-society’ disaster resilience,” noted Sarah Johnson, Director of IRDR. “By translating global guidelines into local action, it creates a sustainable pipeline for youth to shape policies and programs that will define our collective safety for decades.”
